Gothenburg Energy (GE), in cooperation with the Port of Gothenburg are engaged in an effort to introduce LNG as a fuel in Gothenburg. The goal is to contribute to the sustainable city by providing a shipfuel that is much cleaner than the fuel used today. The project will enable the Port of Gothenburg to offer alternative fuel for ships. Creating the conditions for sustainable transport concepts, thereby strengthening the port’s competitiveness.
The next decade is expected to have significantly more environmental restrictions and emissions will have to be reduced significantly and the need for new alternative fuel will increase. Our vision is to be the natural choice of fuel supplier in Gothenburg.
The greatest environmental benefit achieved by changing the fuel in large ships and it requires large investments. In addition to that the vessels must be adapted to liquid natural gas, we will need a new infrastructure on land so that the gas can be delivered to ships. Our business’ main objective is to construct a terminal which will be able to receive deliveries of liquefied natural gas for further delivery to bunker boats which will supply the vessels. The goal is for us to begin delivering LNG in 2013.
Powerful alliance create opportunities
The investment in LNG is carried out in conjunction with the Port of Gothenburg. GE has worked with gas since 1846 and is Western Sweden’s leading energy supplier. Port of Gothenburg is the hub for shipping to Scandinavia. Together, the parties have the resources and skills needed to establish a new infrastructure for LNG.
Collaboration
LNG GOT, together with Swedish Marine Technology Forum, FKAB Marine Design, Cryo AB, Det Norske Veritas AS and White Smoke AB have worked together in a technology development project concerning LNG bunkering ship to ship.
